Underneath Fully Funded!

As we mentioned earlier, Jim and I were running a Kickstarter campaign to fund the development of Underneath. We’re glad to report that our campaign was successful and we’ve been funded!

What does that mean? It means the entire Underneath series will be completed much faster than if we were funding it ourselves. It means we’ll be able to print more copies. It means we can spend some extra money on marketing.

A big thank you goes out to everyone that supported our campaign with pledges and getting the word out there. We appreciate it!

So what is Underneath?

Hey folks. Tom Stillwell here. I’m the writer and half of the creative team behind Underneath. Hopefully you’ve read the inaugural post of this website telling you a tale of an ancient pool, the man-eating Weendigo and the guardians that defend Chicago from their menace. Did that pique your interest? We hope so.

I’ve been told that the best pitches for comics are short ones. If something can’t grab someone’s interest right away then you’re probably don’t have a winner. With that in mind I’ll keep the premise of Underneath short: Homeless people vs. Trolls.

When I’ve told people that premise I’ve gotten this almost universal response:

“Where can I buy it?”

So I guess we have a winner.

There’s a lot of other stuff involved like hidden underground cities, rituals and secret societies but that will keep for when you’re actually holding a copy of Underneath #1 in your hands. Speaking of Underneath #1, head on over to our gallery for a look at the first six pages of the book. Jim Terry, the co-creator of Underneath, is handling the illustration. Pretty sweet, huh? You can also check out our cast page to learn more about the main characters of Underneath.

Look for further updates on Underneath’s progress soon. Thanks for reading.

Let me tale you a tale…

Before Chicago was a city, before the white man cleared the prairie and swamp to build their roads and towers, there was the pool. The pool had always been. A doorway to another place, a place filled with dark things seeking to enter our world. The Keepers of The Fire kept watch over the pool, keeping the Weendigo, the man-eaters at bay.

But the settlers came and the Keepers gave up their sacred charge, cursing the white man to deal with the dark things. Other guardians answered the call to protect man from the Weendigo, but they were too few and on too many full moons the dark things crept into our world unchecked. The man-eaters sought sanctuary from the day in the dark places, coming out only at night in search of meat or gold. They feared only the light of day, the flame of fire and the touch of cold iron.

Eventually the Weendigo became so great in the number that the shadow guardians of the city purged Chicago with a great fire. Many of the man-eaters perished. Still, some survived and hid, waiting for more full moons and an unguarded pool.

Now, the guardians of the pool are the unwanted of society. The ones no one will miss if snatched in the night to be Weendigo meat. Under the city they clash, the man-eaters and the forgotten Keepers.

This is Underneath.
